Does your employer have to pay you your normal wage for jury service or do you have to claim it back from government?

The court will reimburse any lost money + expenses. Your employer may well still pay you but if they don't you should not lose out.
Your employer does not have to pay you (although some larger organisations might continue to pay your wages while you're off). If you don't get paid by your employer during jury service you will get reimbursed by the court service. You fill in a form & they send you a cheque.

This should have been explained in the literature sent you when you were called up. If you're not certain of all the ins & outs there will be a queries number on the letter / notice.

It wasn't for me. A girl at work was called and she kept moaning about how hard-up she was going to be because she wasn't getting paid. I knew you got paid somehow and I know you can't lose out financially when doing jury service. I just wanted to be able to tell her she was wrong.
ah, I see. Just tell her to check her paperwork (bet she already knows tho!). Not only will she get reimbursed for lost wages, she'll also get a food allowance for each day AND she'll get to go home somewhere between 3 & 4 o'clock each day.
