For example the ex could not stop him going into the house and living there unless there is a Court order excluding him. Also, the house cannot be sold without his agreement unless a Court order is obtained.
To what extent he has a financial interest depends on the circumstances. If they were married then their respective interests should have been sorted out in the divorce. Otherwise, the two of them should try and agree a split of the value.
I think it is quite unusual for a mortgage lender to take someone off a mortgage while they remain a joint owner. Are you sure this has been done?
