I'm no longer bankrupt but I still have a credit record that would put the Hamiltons to shame.

I have a Co-Operative Bank Cashminder Account. It's not a cheque account and doesn't offer an overdraft facility, but you do get an Electron Visa card and you can have your salary or benefits paid directly into it. You can also make payments out via direct debit and standing order etc.

You only pay fees if your direct debts etc are refused (something like 19 per transaction), and you have the comfort of knowing they're an ethical bank.

Most banks offer a basic bank account - no cheque book, no overdraft, just a card. They just don't publicise them that much.

You probably won't get an account with a cheque book.

Nationwide also do a basic account for bankrupts, & I believe Barclays (&/or their Woolwich subsidiary) may do so as well.
NatWest do a good basic account with a Solo/Maestro card as well. A year or so after you have been discharged you should have some good credit and you can then upgrade your account but you will need written proof that you have been discharged.
Halifax and NatWest do basic bank accounts. As per another reply Natwest has a solo debit card but Halifax is Visa Electron which i dont think is as widely used as Solo.

My husband is a discharged bankrupt. He has a cardcash account with natwest who have recently told him that he will never be upgraded to a current account because of his bankruptcy history as is their policy.

Very odd considering he has just taken out a 2nd loan for a car. The last loan he had was paid regularly & settled on time. I can't quite make it out...
