How do you go about purchasing shares? I would like to buy them as an investment and am not thinking about dealing them for many years yet. Most of the accounts i can find involve trading. I would simply just like to buy the shares and leave them there.

The essence of shares is in fact constant trading, not holding for years. The fortunes of companies varies considerably from time to time, and if you are not constantly monitoring some totally disappear taking your money with them. The Stock Exchange is no different to Ladbroke's, it's all just a gamble. If you have some cash that you want to be safe and watch grow, a deposit account with one of the big four can be quite satisfactory.
