buying stocks and shares

i want to buy shares at home,i dont want to be a big money gambler, i want to "play" at it!!
i want to learn how to do it myself but i could do with someone giving me advice in layman terms and also point me in the right direction of sites to go to!

First advice I would give, you need money to play.
Second piece of advice, it's not something to play at.
Try taking out a play market account, or keeping a detailed journal of trades you would make and why. Paper trade for at least 6 months and make sure you are winning before committing money - if you gamble you lose, you must develop an edge over the other guy. It's a zero profit game out there.

Also when you are confident to go ahead and invest only use money you can afford to loose, it is a form of gambling and it is easy to get deeply involved i.e. chasing losses.With over 30 years in the business the best advice apart from the above I would give is that its a lot easier to take a small profit than to bear a large loss.
