It it possible to trace what bank a payment has come from, by just the cheque number

Not with just a cheque number, no. You would need a sort code.

I basically have a cheque which has been payed in to my account - they only reference is a cheque number, and I have to explain where it has come from ?

The cheque number is the one thing you don't need to know.
You need the sort code and account number - even then your bank might refuse to divulge the owner of the account. The sort code would identify the bank, which is public domain; the account number the payer which is not..

Ask your bank for a microfilm copy of the cheque which they should be able to provide. They will have information on where the cheque was paid in so will be able to retrieve a copy based on this info. There is no breach of data protection here because you are only obtaining info regarding a payment into YOUR account. I used to manage a department for a major bank and we processed requests like this all the time. You may be charged a small fee for this. Alternatively, ask for a copy of the paying in slip which accompanied the cheque as this may bear a signature.

Yep, get a photocopy of the cheque. You'll have to pay for it but the cheque will clearly have the issuing bank's logo across it just as your own chequebook does.
