There once was a married persons tax allowance but this government obviously being against the nuclear family abolished it and replaced it with family tax credit, presumably to raise the numbers of illigitimato.

As far as local authority funding goes I don't think there has ever been a financial benefit to being married.

The only way the council tax would change is if you were living on your own (or partner was) and you moved in together afterwards. It would go up rather than down though as you would lose the single person discount.

You could well lose benefits being married, but you can leave all your possessions to a wife and not pay inheritance tax!. But that rather defeats the object of having any , being dead.
