Divorce and selling the house

My friend is separating from his wife after three years of marriage. they have a 2 year old daughter and have agreed to sell the house in 2 years time and divide the equity. However, I have a feeling that his wife would not have to give him any equity, or only a small percentage of it until their daughter is 18.

Can anyone advise on this issue?

It is likely that she would be able to remain in the house until their child finishes full time education. He would still be responsible to contributing to their needs i.e. mortgage & maintenance.
