Reclaiming bank charges
8 Answers
I'm going to start reclaiming my bank charges from two old banks and a credit card company.
I have heard stories about the thousands of people who have done this so i just wondered if anyone on here has and what was your experiences.
I might considder going through a company who charges 20% of the re-couped money....any suggestions.
I've had a look at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewn ews.cgi?newsid1141050760,24632, and it was most helpful.
Looking forward to reading about your experiences.

I went through www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk. It has forums for each bank, and is not as cluttered as MSE. Don't get me wrong I love MSE site, I just found that CAG much easier to follow. Forget going through another company. Its really easy to do. Your 1st step is to send off a S.A.R letter along with 10 - basically asking for all the information that they have on you. You have to allow them 40 days to send you your statements. If you already have your statements, you can miss off the SAR Letter. All the letters you need are in the Bank template letters on CAG,
http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk. Forgot to put the bit at the front so you could link to CAG.
My daughter already had one, but she also went to Lloyds and got a basic account there. I was surprised that Nationwide closed her account, as she had been a customer for several years, had problems for 3 months earlier this year - their fault as much as hers, as she had cancelled dd's, but they failed to do it. (they had previously refused her a small overdraft for just these occasions) She then kept her account clean from July this year. They send out a blanket letter saying they are closing accounts and pay back your overdraft (bear in mind she didn't have one) - so be aware, Nationwide do close your account. I was of a mind to write to the head honcho, and complain, but didn't bother. I will do that early next year when I change my mortgage and put that as one reason for doing it. Family loyalty and all that!!!!

As jennyp rightly says do it all yourself through the CAG site.
Follow their advice and spend lots of time reading through the FAQ's and subscribe to the thread that is relevent to your own bank. It all looks a bit daunting at first but it soon starts to make sense.
I am just 8 days away from sending my LBA, assuming that I have had no response from my bank by that time.
Good luck
