Change of pay period

Our company has been taken over recently and our pay is being changed from weekly to monthly. Can this be done without any lead in period. This is going to be painful for some of the staff as the first payday is 28.02.07. Any help appreciated or links to websites so that we can read up on it.

When our company switched from weekly to monthly they decided to pay staff mid way through the month. For them not to do so would have led them to exploitation of gaining interest on the unpaid wages.
