How do charities make money from used stamps?

Sell them to stamp dealers - who then sell them on, often by weight. The amount received per stamp is trivial. but numbers add up.
But who buys them from the stamp dealers-why would anyone want them?
People buy them to go through them in the hope of finding something unusual or unpostmarked stamps they can use again.

The stamp dealer may also sort them into packets and sell them to collectors as '200 mixed GB' for example - probably more of interest to overseas buyers. It depends how much work he wants to do for relatively little return.

If you search for stamps on e-bay you'll probably find something in the first category.
