Can you still use the old stamps which just say 1st or 2nd on them on an A4 envelope? The new stamps say 1st Large or 2nd Large on them for the A4 size. If i use an old stamp will the person who receives it have to pay extra?

You can use them but they are only worth the current standard 2nd or 1st class mail rates. You have to put an extra 14p or 12p on for a large letter (37p/44p currently)

If you don't the person who receives it will probably have to pay the extra, though it is possible that sometimes the Royal Mail won't bother collecting it.

Ok thanks.
I find that they take great delight in picking these envelopes up in the system - something to do with the extra 1 handling charge that is extracted before the letter will be released, one suspects?
