How much does it cost to send a piece of paper in an A4 envelope? Will a first class stamp not suffice now?

Yes a 1st class would be fine f it's just the one page
I thought anything A4 size was now classed as a large letter
If by A4 size you mean the size of an unfolded A4 sheet of paper, then it's a large letter and costs 40p second 48p first.

If you can fold it in half (A5 envelope) then it would be standard first or second postage.
I sent a stamped addressed A4 envelope to someone with a first class stamp on it and when it came back to me I had to pay an extra 1.08 as its no longer enough postage.

So, no - a first class stamp most definitely does not suffice!
You need to get a large first class stamp available from the Post Office for larger envelopes. Two different stamps now (both first and second class) for smaller and larger envelopes because the post is priced on size and weight now.
