We bought a house 16 months ago, last week we received a letter from the solicitors saying that due to their miscalculation we still owed them some money. They have asked that we pay this in order to clear the ledger. Obviously, we believed this had been cleared a year ago. Should we pay this? Will they be able to do this again in the future?

Yes you should, strange as it seems this happens both ways, I once bought a house and the solicitor sent me a cheque 18 months later for an amount "left on the ledger" they also added interest. Errors happen at least they are not charging interest!
depends on how much they miscalculated if its a small amount say under 100.00 I would tell them to stick it.
However I know I would argue this with them and no matter how much it was.
oh this happened to me, they sent the account and then said they had forgotten to deduct the arrangement fee for the broker, i had written them a letter prior to engaging them as they had made a previous mistake with my dad's estate, and i asked for assurance that i could trust them. they sent a letter assuring me they would do a proper job and if i wasnt satisfied i could contact a senior partner, 6 months afyer everything was settled they decided this amount had been missed off the statement and wanted it repaying, i argued, siting their letter, but they threatened to take me to court and so i had to pay them, i didn;t contest they were not entitlked to the money but i did argie that they had broken a written undertaking. won;t be using them again.
