I've just received my monthly bank statement and I have noticed that Natwest is going to take 28 from my account as a "maintenance charge".
What the hell is this? I've never had this deducted before and will it be a monthly thing?

I am trying to change my bank...well..trying to get a loan at least. Its not as easy as they make it out to be.
Did you go overdrawn recently, without an authorised overdraft, or exceed your overdraft limit?
Question Author
Yes I did. I went overdrawn at the end of the month by about 15 and do you know why? Because Natwest charged me interest on that date, thats why I went overdrawn! They are chargng me 28 for not having enough money to pay their interest!
That's what the maintenance charge is then - their name for unauthorised overdraft fee.

You could ring them up and grovel. They may refund as a goodwill gesture.

Ethel-are banks still paying back customers that claim this charge? I made a claim a year ago and they paid me back. Would I have to send them the same letter once again?
As far as I know it is all on hold until this big case goes through the courts. Nobody is refunding anything yet, but neither are they saying 'no'.

The current stance is 12 per transaction is acceptable, but who knows how it will go.
I would change my bank if I were you. I am with First Direct, and they pay you some interest even though it is very small. There is also an automatic overdraft facility of about 200, which I have never used. I would recommend them to anybody.

On a more serious note, I saw in a paper some months back that the days of free banking are numbered, and all current accounts will be charged in the next few years. I have just remembered that you have to have a balance of 1,500 or more in a First Direct to avoid their charges.

... as in www.fistdirect.com ?!?!

I have just opened a letter myself to discover a maintenance charge of 28 pounds. Have never had this before from Natwest. It seems like they can just keep on introducing new charges whenever the hell they like! If you find anything out could you let me know and I will do the same. Think a change of bank might be in order.

I have about 10 of those charges from Natwest in the last year. I am repaying my overdraft and will gladly take my money elsewhere.
