After all the fiasco with Northern Rock I am a bit worried about opening a fixed rate bond, if anything happens to the bank or building society when they have my money !! Is it safest to invest a maximum of 35,000 into any one company ??

Well that's what I do. The limit is doubled if you have a joint account
e.g. if one person had 30,000 in a single account and the other had 2,000 in their own name and you bothe had a joint account of 60,000 you would each have a 30,000.
Of your 60,000, 35,000 would be guarenteed.
All of your partners 32,000 would be guarenteed.
Of course, there might be tax reaasons for having it one name or the other
