Can anyone tell me why Supermarkets pay farmers and other food producers so little even though their profits are so high?
I've been thinking about this ever since the Jamie Oliver chicken program. He said that only 3p out of the 2.50 (or whatever the price is) went to the chicken farmer.
It's because they can. If the chicken farmer doesn't like the price they are offering, he says no and then the man from Tesco goes elsewhere for his chickens. The chicken farmer then goes bust as he's got nobody to sell his chickens to. The supermarkets have them over a barrel really.
I just feel really bad for these farmers and producers. They get such a raw deal. I wonder if there are any petitions going against these big supermarkets. Sadly, over the last 15 years, where I live all of the butchers and most of the decent green grocers have had to close down due to the big Tesco taking over.
What also angers me is the huge pay rises the top dogs get each year.
