Apart from it being illegal what is there to stop someone opening more than one cash ISA in a tax year.
I am certainly not thinking of doing this I am merely curious.

You have to declare that you dont have any cash mini isa's at the time you attempt to open another.

If you do open more than one cash isa the isa police come and lock you up and collect the tax you owe them on the addittional isa.
The ISA providers will provide a list of every ISA they open to HMRC.

HMRC will cross check the lists to see that the same person (probably identified by NI number) doesn't occur twice.

Then as batman says.
Your application asks for your NI number. The tax people (HMRC) can do checks for duplicates.
i had isa in my own bank account, can i open one for me and my bf's joint account? as he doesnt have one.
ISAs can't be in joint names I believe. He can open one in his own name.
