I had to take early retirement on health grounds from my employment in local government and was given a small pension based on service, I am now of retirement age and have not claimed my state pension, my question is how will these pensions affect each other?.
Depending on the level of income from both pensions depends on taxation. State pension is deducted from your code as that is the only way it can be taxed. Any tax free sum left after this deduction can be used against your other pension,
Probably not at all - apart from tax arrangements.
There is the possibility that if your local government service was a long time ago (before 1980 or thereabouts) then that pension will be reduced by a small amount (and I do mean a small amount - I think 1.70 a year for each year of service prior to that date) when you become eligible for the state pension. You may not remember but you paid reduced NI at the time if this affects you.
