how long after you turn 18 can u get credit

i have just turned 18 and wanted a contract mobile, but didnt pass the credit check, ive never had a credit card or any debt before.my old contract was in my dads name, i cant inderstand why this has happened help please

One of the reasons could be there is no history to check against. Haing no credit history is almost as bad as having a bad record.

Not your fault admittedly, a history is something you accrue in time.

so how do i go about building up my credit rating?

Go for easy credit - get a store card (but don't use) or join a catalogue shopping thingy

I'd say USE the storecard - for a few small purchases - and pay off in full to avoid interest. You need to show you pay as required - not just have a card with no history.

MOst important thing - get on the voters role if you are not already.

If a lender can't find you, they will not lend to you.
