Moving On
5 Answers
Am pondering my next move now I'm single again.
Ex wants to stay living together for a while as he can't afford to live on his own at the moment.
So need to sort out finances before going our separate ways but not quite sure how to go about it.
We split rent, council tax and utilities which is all cool.
We got a car back in January this year, each contributed to the deposit on and have finance on, we split the petrol (one pays one week, the other the next like we do with shopping).
I paid half the tax and pay half the finance payments and his insurance.
I don't drive but obviously get some benefit from there being a car but now we've split that will decrease significantly.
Am trying to work out the fairest way of dealing with the car. I understand that if it's sold then we won't get anything back due to the finance.
I don't think my ex can afford the repayments, petrol, tax and insurance on his own.
I want to sort something so we can move on but don't want to drop him right in in financially.
Does anyone have any ideas?

It will have to be sold, and the loss shouldered by both of you.
Don't be tied together over a car if you are both sure you should separately.

Hello and thank you for your answers.
We went out for lunch earlier and had a chat about things.
The car is in his name, as is the finance. I know I probably won't get the part of my deposit back or tax or RAC for this year which is fair enough.
We are going to try and work out a way which is fairer which me contributing according to my usage, our weekly shop, if he takes me anywhere, joint trips so hopefully that will work through. Will see how it pans out when he works out how much less he will get from me a month.
I may even learn to drive if he can help me practice somewhere safe off road so I at least have my licence.
When we went for a flat I went for one with 2 bedrooms in case we did ever split so we have separate ones now.
We are both ok with living in the same flat for now and it's all very amicable and we get on very well. It helps him get his finances back on track and I have someone around to help me when I'm unwell.
Obviously there will come a point when we both need to move on and we will tackle that.
