As debit cards take money directly from your current account, only the bank with the current account can issue the debit card.
Yes you can - but in the UK it's called Maestro.

As Ethel says, it depends on what your bank offers you on your particular account.

Oh right thanks - its just that I someone I was speaking to re: work asked if a clients card was a credit card or a debit card (as they are taking a payment from it) and I said it was a credit card without really knowing but I was pretty sure it was a credit card.
debit cards usual have more numbers and an issue number
Mastercard have JUST started issueing a debit card which I expect will be available soon - don`t know if each bank will issue it as well as Visa but most likely. I only know because of the information been getting a a merchant.
P.S. Just read your second post and it is most likely that the card was new MasterCard Debit - hence the query.
Debit card don't generally have more numbers in contrast to what was said earlier. Most debit AND credit cards are 16 digit numbers.

Some debit cards are 19 digit numbers (so far as I am aware no credit card is ever a 19 digit number) it's true but these are more unusual.

A debit card will however have an issue number. A credit card will not. A credit card always has a Valid From date whereas a debit card might not do (though some do).
