I want to change some pounds into euros. I know there are commission-free deals available, but sometimes paying a little bit of commission can be worth it to ensure a better exchange rate. Is there a website that lists the various different rates available at banks, travel agents, the Post Office etc?

Esentially there is only one true rate - the interbank rate set by supply and demand. And major web site will have these rates listed and not one of them will be tourist rates! Try www.forexdirectory.net/gbp.html and ensure java is enabled for live quotes. The next challenge is to get the best deal. If a one-off transaction try Lloyds TSB or another main bank. They have daily figures faxed to them so go in on a good exchange day and ask them for currency. Many do not offer the latest 'spot' prices but do offer commision free. Some do on opening a new account too. You could always use www.customhouse.com to convert and pay from one currency to another but only works if you have multiple currency accounts otherwise you are limited to buying the cash from the best source eg. a bank or tourist currency dealer (last resort on earth).
