I want to send a small amount of money to The Gambia and have been told that I can use Western Union - how do I go about this transaction?

I would think very carefully here. I don't know how to do it, but I do know that one of the reasons that people ask for this type of transfer is because it is immediate, irreversible and untraceable. So unless this is someone you know well, consider the implications very carefully. If it is payment for a service or goods, why are they doing it this way? I hope that all is above board, but think long and hard about this. Good luck.
If you do actually want to do it you can go to www.westernunion.com and select the UK - there is an 0800 number there. I would again suggest that this is not a safe method of paying someone you have never met. http://www.westernunion.co.uk/info/homePage.asp?country=GB&o rigination=US
The western union web site will give you details of a local office which will handle your request. Having been paid that way before it was pretty straight forward. However, due to the costs involved and lack of security I wouldn't be keen to pay for anything that way unless I knew the person involved.
I have done this many times through Lunn Poly, in our city centre branch.  You need to take your passport with you for identification.
