Such systems inevitably require considerable financial investment, so very large and often multinational enterprises were often the first to embrace them.
Many took the opportunity to upgrade their systems prior to the time of the Y2K software bug fiasco in the run-up to the millennium. The major players were SAP, Oracle, Peoplesoft and JD Edwards.
Once the largest corporations had been sold a solution, providers started turning their attention in mid-sized companies and other (smaller) players started to get a toe-hold into the market.
Now, virtually all businesses of 30+ staff have some sort of IT system that runs their finance system. But an ERP system also embraces every other function in the company - HR, sales, ops planning and control, purchasing, control of assets, according to whatever the company does. There are still very many companies for which integration of these functions seems an unnecessary luxury that is not cost-justifiable.
