has VAT gone down on food?

i went food shopping today and i didnt get that much VAT off. is it only on certain products? i did quite a big shop but it still added up!

vat isnot chargeable on most foods anyway.
Stuff like chocolate biscuits, and cakes are not classed as essential and therefore attract vat, but most staples never have
The majority of food is zero rated anyway, and on the items that are subject to VAT, I think they are adjusting at checkout.

vat is not charged on food for humans including meat, ready meals and cakes. but is chargeable on food supplied for catering or hot take-aways, sweets including chocolate and other sweetened food, crisps, nuts and other savoury snacks, ice cream and cones, mineral water and other drinks

oh right i understand, never really got how it works but thanks
..................though of course a significant element of the cost of food items will be packaging and delivery both of which ARE relevant for VAT.
