if my 17 year old sister in -law gets a part time job while she is doing a full time couse at collage, is my mother in-law still intitle to child benefit?
Child benefit is not means tested, so if she is doing a full-time course leading to A levels or an equivalent vocational qualification, I think she should still be entitled to child benefit.
Child Benefit is payable to everyone regardless of their income. The only criteria for who receives it is where the child spends the majority of their time. If there are 2 parents and the child spends the majority of his/her time at the father's home (weekends at mum's) - the father would receive payments. The current rates of child benefit are 16.50 for the first/only child and 11.05 for every other child thereafter per week. The lone parent rate is 17.55 as opposed to the 16.50 but this is currently being phased out and does not increase every April. No new applications for Lone Parent ChB can be made now. Bored yet...?
She will get ChB until her 19th birthday as long as she is not in higher education but remains in further education. The Inland Revenue do not take the child's income into consideration at all.
