Full cover means the policy will pay out the cost of repairs to your car, and that of anyone else involved in an accident. Thir party cover means the other person involved, the 'third party' - the first two being the insurance company and you - gets his damage paid for by the policy, but you have to fund your own repairs yourself, assuming you are liable for the accident.
I recently had an accident - 50/50 liability - and am very glad I had comprehensive. This meant all my own bills were paid and I got a hire car while mine was being repaired. I had to pay an excess but it is well worth paying for comprehensive. If you do not have an accident for 5 years the policy may also give you protected benefits so your insurance cost does not rise the following year - I am not sure is 3rd party insurance can offer you this. If it cant then this is another good reason to get it.
