The closest to an "official" HPI would be that of the Land Registry. Its data series starts January 1995.

The Halifax House Price Index is the UK's longest running monthly house price series covering the whole country from January 1983.

The Nationwide House Price Index has yearly data stretching back to 1952 (some other indices going back to 1946). Quarterly data exists from Q4 1974.
