Tortoiseshell

I have some old peices of tortoiseshell, (dressing table set) can anyone tell me if they are worth anything or should I bin them?

Is it real tortoiseshell or Bakelite or other form of plastic? You can't sell real tortoise shell on eBay so there is no quick way of seeing if your goods have any value.
On the whole dressing table sets are not valuable. People don't want used hairbrushes.
