Cheque to USA

I am trying to get a death certificate from New York. It costs $10. They say I can send a cheque as a money order doubles the cost.
Do I write the cheque in dollars or sterling?

You can only write a cheque in dollars if the account actually holds dollars. I would assume that you are asking if you write the cheque from your UK account. Assuming that your account is in pounds, you would only be able to send a money order from your account. Essentially the charge for something like this is about �10 (even for an electronic transfer) so that is how the price is 'doubled'. The only way I can think you could get around this is if someone in the US writes a cheque on your behalf. You can then possibly use Paypal to send it to them.

You bank will provide you with a US$ cheque, but there will be a fee involved.

The City Clerk in Buffalo NY said send a cheque if I am sure it won't bounce. She knows that I am in England.
It seemed a bit strange.
Perhaps I'll send a 10 dollar bill plus my letter to a contact I have in the US and she could send them a cheque as you suggested, I don't have Paypal

Why don't you just send the $10 dollars direct? Do they not accept cash?
