Is it true that if I only spend 6 months a year in the UK, I can earn as much as I like here without paying tax?

This is an incredibly complicated issue. Set aside a few hours for reading (and trying to make sense of) HMRC's rules:

The short answer is almost certainly "No".

You'd need to become non-resident for tax purposes first, not an easy process necessarily. Depending on where you actually live you may well suffer tax at that end also.
