Tipping the barber (not a euphemism)

I had my hair cut a couple of days ago, zero setting all over; it takes less than 2 minutes, with very little tidying up at the end, and costs £8.

Usually I hand over a tenner and tell them to keep the change but this time I kept the £2 because I'm feeling a bit skint this week (and it was the miserable woman this time). But I've been feeling a bit guilty about that since.

So what do others usually do in this circumstance? Not give a tip or, if so, how much? The haircut works out at well over £200 per hour so should a tip still be expected?

why don't you just buy a home shearing kit?

I don't always tip, so don't feel guilty about it. no one tips me at work!
Always tip, in the, possibly misplaced, hope that the cutter keeps the money and the boss doesn't snaffle it !
But 'miserable woman' wouldn't get much of a tip, if any, from me.
If its says £8 then Im sure any overheads (if youll excuse the pun) are included .Put the £2 on Italy to win world cup and you can tip here next time outta the winnings.

You say that you don't always tip which must mean that there are times when you do. Are these just on the spur of the moment?
In my opinion I believe tipping should be optional. If you don't think tipping is necessary in a particular circumstance, then don't tip. However if you are using a service that is widely-known to be a tipped service, such as restaurants, bars, hair salons, valet parking, etc., then I believe there is a moral obligation to tip for good service.
My barber charges me a special pensioner's rate of £8 so I give him a tenner, tell him to keep the difference, and we're both happy.
I usually tip my hairdresser, but ladies' stuff is more expensive anyway OH doesn't tip the barber. I think it's a matter sometimes of how much the service costs!

Right, that's it, no more tips for them. Thanks for helping me get rid of that scruple.
the trouble is many have come to expect it automatically regardless of the service they are providing..and actually get shirty if they dont

tips are meant to reward exceptional service - where someone has gone abover and beyond...not just because someone has merely adequately performed the job they are already PAID to do and for which you are already paying too...

i think people shoudl generally tip less because it has spoilt the meaning and no longer inspires good service...its become expected...

i will round up to the pound sometimes, but thats about it really...
I get the OAP discount and round up £8.50 to a tenner.
I'm surprised you don't just buy your own clippers, save a fortune.
You need to be a bit of a contortionist to use your own clippers, though.

I did try clippers once when my hair was an inch or two long - never again; to avoid embarrassment it was necessary to wear a hat to get to the barbers for them to do it properly.
I was exactly the same as you , allways said keep the change from the tenner , Until recently that was, I had a job interview and wanted around my ears just tideing up , not more than 5 mins and he charged me full price, As of then I don't give him anymore than i should as I felt that after 30 odd years of going he should have used his discretion and charged accordingly .....
I got my hair done today, Came to €82 which is much cheaper than usual, i tipped the stylist and girl who done my colour and wash €5 each...
ouch supersuey!! i normally pay 7 euros for my haircut
I don't tip - concurr with Sara - I don't get tipped at work.. if they want to charge me £10 instead of £7.50 for the boys hair cut then so be it... but they ask for £7.50 so that's what they get!
Do barbers still ask - ' would sir like something for the weekend ?'
I always tip because I am fussy with my hair and they always do it right for me. If I am not happy with any service anywhere I don't tip simple as. If they do a good job then its only natural to me to give them a little extra, inc taxis etc...
I have been going to the same barber for over 30 years, he really takes his time over my cut. He charges £8 and I allways give him a tenner and say'' keep the change''.
