Maltese Lire

Hi, I have found some Maltese Lire from our last holiday there, I think it was in 2006. My granddaughter (aged 13) is going in a few weeks and I wondered if the banks over there will still change them into Euros. I have Lm14 in notes and Lm6.70 in coins, I have googled and found a currency converter and that gave me a figure of £27.28 just for the notes which seems to me to be a very good exchange rate. I don't think they change coins but maybe some places still accept them. My granddaughter is going with her friend and her friends grandma who happens to be Maltese, but I don't know her grandma so don't like to ask until I know for definite that they can be exchanged. Exchange of pre-euro non-legal tender currency for euro is the responsibility of the Central Bank of each individual state.

Maltese coins remained exchangeable for euro until 1st February 2010. Thus they are no longer exchanged by the CB of Malta.

Maltese banknotes of the 5th Series (issued from Sep 1989) can still be exchanged for euro at the Central Bank of Malta, without any additional cost, until 31st January 2018. The Lm10 note of the 4th Series (issued from Mar 1986) is still exchangeable for euro, without any additional cost, at the Central Bank of Malta until 13 September 2010.

The irrevocable fixed exchange rate is 0.429300 Lm per euro.
