I am looking for an online current account where I pay the least possible in charges. I would need normal facilities i.e. direct debits, cheques, overdraft facility etc.

If you don't bounce lots of cheques and direct debits and keep the statements that are posted to you then you'll find that most, if not all of the banks have accounts where you would pay no charges.
Can you be a bit more specific about the charges that you hope to avoid? Interest while overdrawn?
Agree with Stevie, if you run your bank account within normal limits then I'm not aware of any that even still charge for the basics, we aren't the US!

As for general ideas, I use cahoot and first direct to good effect, but also have accounts with Nationwide and Natwest for various reasons and overall they are all much of a muchness.
