Business development and marketing

I am about to start a new job and they tell me I will need to do some marketing and business development. Does anyone have ideas about how best to go about this since I've not done any before. Good places to look online and recommended books would also be helpful. Thanks.

I am surprised they didn't ask you how you would do the marketing and business development in the interview, or selection procedure before offering you the job.

Marketing is about how you present the product to the consumer in order to maximise sales.

Business development, I assume, is where you increase efficiencies in the running of the business and expand sales, using marketing.

Thanks. Most of the job (90%) is doing what I know about. They are actually guidng me in action plans for the business development - I just have to attend loads of business breakfasts, do mailshots and attend seminars (and maybe arrange same). It's really just lots of networking which I've never bothered with before. It's more fun than it sounds.
