Cashier performance calculation help please

Manager compares performance of 3 cashiers (a,b,c) in particular time period 12.00 - 14.00. How long it took 1 customer to be served? 1 cashier served 50 during that period. X bar = service time for each cashier per 1 customer. S = standard deviation by each cashier per 1 customer. What would be a)the use of the statistics? B)mean of these statistics? Show workings

Straight comparison not much use, need to allow for natural variation. Could develop a confidence interval for true mean. Seems to rely on a lot of assumptions about the underlying distribution of service times (often negative exponential is assumed). What course are you studying? It sounds like a business/management course taught by someone "none too competent".
