I wished to pay a £20 credit card statement at Co-Op Bank. I offered a £20 note, but was informed that :'We can't accept cash, sorry'.

Since when was this not legal tender ?

I would have followed up the 'regulations' comment.
Maybe it's money laundering regulations but I can't see it if they know you as a customer.
Was it definitely your own credit card bill you are paying?

I assume you are a Coop Bank customer and have a bank account.

I still think there's been a misundertsnding here.

Yes, it was my own credit-card bill I was attempting to pay, as I have done many times before. I do not have a current account with the Co-Op bank, so perhaps this was a ploy to get me to switch banks?

After 22 years, I am well known to this bank and am hardly a suspect for money laundering, and £20 is too paltry for that. The paying-in slip did indicate that cash and cheques were the preferred means of payment, and any enquiry would have shown that my credit rating was A+++, with no defaults, overdrawals or late payments - in fact, the perfect recipient of a Co-Op gold card...but they don't want my cash. Heigh ho.
I think you probably experienced the "bad apple" example whereby the person you dealt with gave you a completely wrong answer. Why not contact the bank's Customer Services, for example via the contacts on their website. This ought to get you the correct official line. Mind you, when I contacted Santander over something silly of them they chose to ignore the point and pick up a tangential matter from my letter to deal with instead - possibly embarrassment over the nonsense. But you should get an answer.
I paid cash in to my account once to cover my mortgage payment which was due next day. I then got a letter and a charge telling me there had been insufficient funds to cover my mortgage payment. When I contacted the bank they told me 'it takes 3 days for cash to clear'. Numpties!
There ya go then ...

Send Karen In : )
Yip, I'll sort them out :)
I love that story Lorri24601!!
I have a business account with Abbey. Recently took in £2k in 20's, which they would not accept over the counter. Was told to 'pop the money in a deposit envelope and post it though the hole in the wal. Now, call me old fashioned, but didnt fancy that idea at all and off I trotted.
But Why landscaper? I've put quite large amounts of cash on to my debit card at the Post Office with no problem. She asks me how much there is, I tell her,she counts it out and gives me a receipt. Job done.

Yes, I probably experienced the 'bad apple syndrome'. Sod's Law.

We learn from experience, and I now know that using a Lloyds Bank card , rather than a Co-Op version. will save a lot of fuss and kerfluffle. Problem expedited, Thank you, all.
landscaper - Abbey told me the same thing with regards to a business account. they said they 'did not have sufficient room in the safe to store cash'!
My Building Society does not pay out cash less then £100 on one card I have. You have to use cash point which I try to avoid if I have to go in the bank to pay bills as well..I only wanted to withdraw £80 so I said ok give me the£100 if I must .So when he gave me the £100 I gave him the card back with £20 to pay back in.The look on his face was a picture. He had done this to me before so I was determined to get my own back as he is not very friendly. If I just want £80 I don't think I should be told to take £100 out.
