It's almost as if the outline of this gigantic, spider-like creature could be the scene of a crime. But that's not the case, obviously. Not on this planet at least. This unusual design is one of 300 geometric figures and 70 animal and plant designs, also referred to as biomorphs, which are thought to have been created between 500BC and 500AD. Some are as large as the Empire State Building. Set in an arid plateau that stretches more than 80km between two towns, they are almost unidentifiable at ground level and were only discovered in the early 1930s, after the advent of flight. But what is their purpose? Many theories have been put forward: an ancient, extra-terrestrial airfield; an astrological calendar; a map of water sources; sacred pathways. Perhaps the most realistic hypothesis is that they were once ritualistic sites to obtain water for growing crops (this is one of the driest places in the world, with as little as 2mm of rain a year). The lines were made by removing weathered, rusty-red pebbles to reveal the stark white earth underneath, and thus create a 'negative' image. Harsh winds deflected by the heat rising from the stones have minimised erosion, preserving them for centuries. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the area has been featured in an Indiana Jones film as well as in a Greenpeace stunt in 2014 to highlight climate change.
