hi..i have 2 adult children 1 working.....1 on jobseekers.....am claiming housing benefit........the one working is on a 12 hr/wk contract...but hours are often more....minimum wage......council want him to pay over £30/week...if earning over £124.....But as hours change on a daily basis may only earn £80 a week...so he would be better off back on jobseekers.....surely this is not right???Or do i need to go to counci each week with a payslip to show his earnings that week????

The deductions for adult working children ( called non dependants) are here, you have to scroll down to the end of the page. http://www.nihe.gov.uk/index/advice/advice_for_housing_executive_tenants/housingbenefit/housing_benefit_advice/non-dependants.htm The deductions range from £13 a week to £87 a week depending on the wage range.

i would have thought so, yes. it would seem reasonable to me that if you are claimimg means tested benefits, then you need to provide proof of that means
also just thinking, that seems a better way of doing it than getting too much benefit, then having to pay it back at the end of the year
It is the average earnings that count.
There are earnings ' ranges' for the amount that a working adult child has to pay. Your sons contributions would put him in the lowest contribution range while the one on JSA pays nothing.
Submitting a new claim every week is impractical they will never keep pace.
Housing benefit can't be paid if you are living with parents anyway !!

Or you are on benefit and declare kid's earnings ? ..I have no working experience of housing benefit but in other benefits that are means tested a regular submission of payslips usually requested...ask at CAB ...
murrymints, the questioner is the one who is getting the HB she is asking how much the working child has to pay to cover his deduction from her benefit .
Which as the link says, can range from £13 to £87 a week depending on the childs earnings. It is not the child that wants to claim HB .
Realise that now Eddie !

Thanks...its a mess..had letter saying the deductions would be £98 a week.despite having payslips.rang....said it took at least 3 weeks to sort...so had sent letter for maximum deductions..was assured..it would be sorted out....and nowhere near £98 / week due to salary.
