Reading through this there is always mention of partners boy/girl friends. Does nobody get married anymore?
Am I too old fashioned? Or, are people afraid of commitment?

Now im in a serious relationship and for me i am more commited to this person than i was my husband as we have a true family.
As we both have failed marriages behind us we are happy to remain as we are for now, knowing that a wedding certificate is just an expensive piece of paper to us

No intention of upsetting anybody but I don't recall it being that expensive to get married. It seems to be that people living together find it too easy to walk away. Although I agree with jake some seem to want to head for the divorce court at the first disagreement.
Jake: It is always nice to ring for a Wedding or any other special occasion. But I don't call it work.

easy to walk away from a marriage??? Not in my experience. It took me years to realise that I would never have children if i stayed married and so i took a long time to make the decision to leave.
And yes, my wedding certificate was an expensive piece of paper and it changes nothing in my opinion. Im in no rush to wed again, maybe it would be nice to one day but my relationship is not worth any less because i am unwed.

Hey all!
I've been married nearly 6 and a half years! I love it! Everyone thought we were insane getting married, my better half is 12 yrs my senior and i was 18 when we married! My parents realized that they couldnt stop me! Many people thought i was making the biggest mistake of my life, however we went ahead anyway! we met and married within six months! By no means am i saying that its been easy, there have been rough patches along the way, however, they have made us stronger as a couple, and understand eachother more! I think being married kept us together, you cant just walk away......!
I love being married, the security, the fact that my best friend is always there, by my side and we face things together! We recently started a family, and now have a three month old! We have always tried (not always worked, but...) to talk stuff though, before it gets too big! Seems to be working so far! Now for the biggest challenge....Parenthood! Scary!
Take care!

I have been with Mr P for 11 years ~ we have been married for 18 months and it is wonderful..but no more wonderful than before.
Having both been in unsuccessful first marriages, we waited until were very sure about marriage..although we did *feel* married beforehand! neither of us think it is easy to walk away from marriage ~ our previous spouses were the ones with that train of thought. The divorces were hard, and it was because of that we decided to wait..neither of us wish to repeat that painful experience.

I'm married and loving it, but lots of our friends have long term partners - one couple has been together for 15 years and have 2 children - and I would say that they are all just as committed as we are. I think their attitude is 'if it aint broke why fix it', and I would agree with that. Marriage isn't for everyone and if you're not religious then there's no need for it (unless you want to).
I have been with my aprtner 8 years, living with him for 3. We would like to get married eventually but to be honest we have things to do to the house etc first and i can not imagine spending our savings on a wedding rather that the house. It seems to be a lot of money to please other people for a day.... if we did it on our own our families would really fall out with us.
if we ever had children we would seriously think about it as i would love for my kids to be part of our big day.
