The nursery I'm thinking of putting our child in states that full payment is expected eveen if away on holiday and half payment over the Christmas period when IT'S closed for a week.
Is this the norm with these places?

Unfortunately yes. Most nurseries charge a flat monthly fee regardless of closure dates/bank holidays etc.

If you are away, it is your choice to not take your child there, the nursery cannot be expected to fill your childs place for just 1 or 2 weeks, so I am willing to pay for this.

It's the over Xmas payment and paying for bank holidays which has always annoyed me, afterall they have no intention of providing the service on these days so why should I pay for it. When I was self employed, if I did not work I was not paid, it should be the same for all service providers.

I have come across the same situation with childminders. Not all childminders charge (before anyone takes offence) but I have not come across any who do not charge where I live.

What a pain. If you want to go away, it's another couple of hundred quid on the price of the holiday. I understand it from a business point, but I agree with the Christmas thing - as you say, if you're self employed you don't get paid (unless you own a nursery!) when you're closed/not working... ah well, just another expense...

Look around, the nursery my lad went to didnt charge for the holidays like christmas and bank holidays, you still had to pay if you was going away but if the nursery was closed then you didnt and rightly so

I think you need to look around a bit. The private nursery we sent our daughter to didn't charge for Christmas and we were entitled to 4 weeks holiday each year, ie if we went away for those 4 weeks we didn't have to pay. Anything over that and we did have to pay.

Just remember that Nurseries are businesses that make a profit. Look at all your options first like Childminders ( much better for under 2's) and if your childs old enough, state Nursery Schools. If you still want to use a Nursery look around a lot, they are all different. Private Nurseries are not always as wonderful as they seem, i've worked in a few in the past!
