why has my son been made to disown his mother and father

my daughter in law has thrown her toys out of the pram and given my son an ultimatum of them or us. we have had no contact withr our grandchildren for more than 7 mths...they have been together for 17years since they were 15 and married 5yrs ago ... my daughter in law has a son by a previous relationship who has been brought up by her parents he is now just turned 18..the grandchildren are 3 and 1 and ever since they were born i have felt i have had to walk on egg shells not to upset her.. but much to my dismay apparantly i have not succeeded..i am so distraught i love and miss them all but all my efforts to contact them via phone email and text are thwarted by my dil and misconstrued as malitious i haven't i malitious bone in my body and its taking me all my time to keep body and soul together and i feell my heart has been broke in two...she even returned a birthday card and gift voucher as return to sender . i really do not feel i have anywhere to turn for help...has anyone any advice on how to deal with this situation

i have had a very emotional conversation with my son and at the end of the day he is putting his wife and children first has he should do .. his hands are tied and feels it is up to his wife and myself to sort out.. which because of the way she will not see me or answer my correspondence is an impossible thing to do
