Does anyone know the title of any really good childrens' book - to read to a class of 5 year olds and hold their attention. A book that we can then lead on to an activity to do with the children.
I just cant seem to find what I want - any good ideas ?
The other one I used to love was The Very Hungry Catapiller! (Although I clearly can't spell it).
Either could lead to an activity. They could discuss a time when they did an unselfish act to help someone for dogger and the big hungry caterpilla (nope, that's not how you spell it either then) could lead to a little science discussion/project.
Thanks all - I suppose I was looking for something new - a fairly new idea in books - the ones you mention are great - but most kids have already heard them - but thanks anyway.
My kids loved Guy Bass's books - the dinkin dings series - when they were younger - he does a series for the 5 + age group too. We also met him at a book festival and was a really great bloke. I'd have a look at the Gormley Ruckles books:
Yes, The Gruffalo is a must. I've read this to my g/children (4 & 6) lots of times and they never tire of it, They have it on dvd and last year the local Palace Theatre did a production we saw that too. Its their fav and my fav too. Look it up. you won't be disappointed.
The Horrid Henry books are very popular with this age group. Alternatively, see if your local library does story sacks - a bag containing a book and lots of things connected with the story which you can then use for activities.
I can remember quite clearly being read a particular story by the nun teacher I had in my first year at school. You could read that one to them and then go into how times have changed.
the title?....little black sambo.....I kid you not!
