What time is his last food before bed and is he having anything which could aggravate him, especially if lying down soon after like fizzy drinks? Food diary is a good idea.
Could he be getting himself worked up about something enough to make him sick at night sometimes?
If he is being ill so often then well worth getting him checked out.

beanbabe - yes, I gave my kids those too. not so much now that they are almost 12 and 11, but they have not missed any time at school since they were 6 and seem to be pretty robust.
langara, could he have migraines? That could very well make him sick during the night and then he could sleep it off and feel fine the next day. Worth watching to see if there is anything triggering it as others have said.
