Im having an Au Pair come over from Germany (to the UK) in November and she wants to study English as an evening class. Are there any special courses for foreign students or will she be able to enrol on one of the standard adult learning classes...? I live in Surrey so if you know of anywhere that offers these services around here that would be excellent! Thanks

Try your local further education college, most offer English classes for foreign students, and they should be free as she is an EU citizen. They are usually "roll on roll off" courses which means you can join the class at any time in the year.

Nice one Kags, and super fast too!! Ill give that a try, cheers

The course you are looking for is known as ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), which I have taught as a volunteer for over ten years.

There are also more formal courses that result in a qualification and which can be taken privately, known as either TEFL or EFL (teaching English as a foreign language).

Some determined students do both ESOL & EFL.

Incidentally, the term evening class has now generally been replaced by ACET (adult continuing education and training) as they take place at all times of the day - our ESOL classes cater mainly for restaurant workers who can't come in the evening so are held at lunchtimes.

I work at a college in West London who offers ESOL and EFL (English Speakers of Other Languages and English as a Foreign Language) free to all EU nationals. Obviously the free course go much quicker than the fee paying ones but if you're interested here's the website:
