Son's mate meant to call for him at 11 but hadnt turned up. He said mate had only txt him an hour ago so he couldnt understand it. Know ing how he gets things wrong I asked to look at his fone and see the txt. Well I have never seen a kid freak out so much. He kept walking backwards with the phone, away from me, clearly trying to delete stuff. I said dont be silly,I just want to see what this boy sent. By now he had ran in the garden and at the top of his voice was shouting " Please mum no!". Christ knows what the neighbours thought. by now he was so hysterical I was thinking what the hell is on this phone - he is only 12! Threatened him that I was confiscating it anyway for a bit due to the ridiculous scene, to which he did a sprint which Usain Bolt would be pround of, straight through house and into front garden, by main road, where again I could see him frantically trying to delete god knows what. Cleed him in and aain he did th shouting and the sobbing. by now the neightbours must be thinking that I have given him a good hiding.At that split second his friend turned up, quite oblivious, Son handed me the phone toddled upstairs with him. And yes, he has wiped every txt and chat on it. So he is upstairs, I have the phone and am absolutely seething and plotting appropriate punishment.

BTW I have never ever looked at his phone ever.

Aw bless him at his age prob had some girl stuff on and answer from mamyalynne said a lot going on and I think we all dread our phones getting in the wrong hands.lol
Maybe when he gets back just have another mum/son chat which I'm sure you do just to let him know he doesn't need to hide anything from you but although you respect his privacy you are his Mum and will always worry and care about him.

He's a lucky lad as well because these days too many kids don't have the backup of their parents.

I was only going to look at that specific friends txt incase he had misread it - I actually said to him find just that txt and show me the screen - he still freaked out. I had already promised him I wasnt going to go through his fone. The punishment was going to be because he blatantly refused to give me the phone, which i wa just going to put in a drawer for a few hours, and for causing such an embarrassing scene in the garden.

Just out of interest, the school always said you should be able to get into your childrens phones in an emergency incase they go missing etc, and their phones are at home - to look for any such clues. Bit blooming difficult when he has password locked it.

Anyway I am going to give him a Blue peter badge and his favourite tea for being such a good boy ; /

12 year olds don't NEED a mobile phone so don't buy them one

Texts he deleted were probably from a girl, otherwise why was he so desperate to stop you seeing them?

I think you've come to the right conclusion. It isn't worth worrying about. But as cazzz's first post said - he sounds more than usually panicky about it; I don't know what that was all about but he might be in need of comforting over something.

I would never, ever read any of my childrens' correspondence, mainly because my mother used to open my letters even when I was married and still living at home while my husband was in the army. She would destroy what she thought she would and read some of them through with the next door neighbour. I don't know what she thought she was doing but she destroyed all my faith in her when I discovered what she was doing and made me vow never to read anyone else's correspondence. I would not even read letters addressed to my husband until he had read them and passed them over to me which he invariably did. So let him have his little secrets. His youth will pass all too soon.
