My children are very polite (but that's from being 'taught' to be - we are polite to them (please and thank you's) so they know that nice manners are important. A lot of it comes down to the nature of the child, mine are very kind and thoughtful of others (might be because there are so many of them). Set a good routine from the start and let them know what is expected of them. Ie behaving when you are out with them. Friends are an influence and I used to hate it when they brought friends home that did not behave. They only usually came once. I would like to think that my children (now adults) have good manners. I know that they would not be rude to people even if provoked and they would not swear at someone either. I don't think I was a particularly strict parent but firm.
