For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I have kids with dodgy stomachs and the formulars I've found that work well are Aptamil first and Nutramigen (prescription only) and Wysoy (prescription if dr reckons he needs a dairy free one) It could be that the formulars have caused a little IBS.
Another good thing you could try, esp if it's painfull is some warm sugar water. It is a decongestant for the bowel and also a mild pain reliever....

I'm with spudqueen on this. My little girl was exactly the same. She was fine when I breastfed for the first couple of weeks, then when she went on SMA Gold started pooping every three or four days and it would be quite solid and hurt her. I started giving her an ounce or so of boiled cooled water (no sugar or anything) three times a day, now twice a day, to rehydrate her and am happy (?!) to say she is now pooping every day. (She's now five months old, by the way)
You can give DILUTED pear or prune juices practically from birth (in reality it's only citric juices that they can't digest before six months).
And - usual answer - if he hasn't done a dooey for over 36 hours, put an infant-size glycerine suppository in him. (No side effects if not overdosed - results in 15 mins or so)
