As long as you don't cook with salt, cover the plate with salt and then add a salty gravy you should be OK. After all, how much gravy do you put on their plates anyway?
I agree that marmite in some boiling water worked very well for my boys when they were small and is a lot quicker than making 'real' gravy, but it's still quite salty so be careful how much you use.
